Introduction to MTSU Write

MTSU Write is a community-facing creative writing program that offers a range of opportunities for writers to develop their skills. The program is based within the English Department and provides a three-semester program for new and experienced writers in fiction, non-fiction, poetry, screenwriting, and playwriting.

Program Components

The program consists of several key components, including:

• Mentorships: a from-home mentorship program that provides one-on-one instruction and support
• Writing Groups: groups that offer writing support and critique in various genres, including fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and screenwriting/playwriting
• Internships: opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to gain real-world experience in publishing, event planning, social media management, and more
• Partnerships: collaborations with organizations in Middle Tennessee and across the country to support writers, readers, and publishers

The mission of MTSU Write is to celebrate the art and craft of creative writing through instruction, mentorship, and outreach. The program values the art of creative writing as a crucial form of human expression and is committed to sharing the craft of writing through mentorship and collaboration.

Application Process and Scholarship Information

To apply to the program, students must submit:

• A cover letter with contact information
• A writing sample (3-5 poems, 1-2 pieces of prose, or a 10-page excerpt from a play or screenplay)
• A resume listing educational background, applicable life experience, and publications
• A statement of writing goals and intentions The program offers partial scholarships to new students, including:
• BIPOC Scholarship: open to writers who identify as Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Color
• Veteran Scholarship: open to writers who have served or are actively serving in the U.S. military
• Financial Need Scholarship: open to writers who claim financial need

Program Structure and Tuition

The program is structured into three sessions, with tuition paid per session. The cost of tuition is:

• $1350 for fall and spring sessions
• $1100 for summer session Tuition does not cover books, materials, travel, or room rentals.

Schedule and Deadlines

The program operates on a trimester schedule, with deadlines for registration and submission of writing packets. The schedule includes:

• Spring Session: January through April
• Summer Session: June through August
• Fall Session: September through December

Graduation and Post-Graduation

Students who complete three sessions are eligible to graduate and receive an MTSU Write certificate. Graduates are welcome to continue enrolling in the program to work on future projects and participate in workshops and community events.
